Humans are the Worst - The biggest threat is not the walkers, but the other survivors who have become militant assholes. These Walking Dead zombies are the more realistic ones!! The important thing to point out is that the walkers do not have X-Men like abilities such as the zombies portrayed in other movies like World War Z and I Am Legend. Of course a hoard of walkers becomes much more dangerous. An experienced surviver can easily deal with 1 or more walkers. They officially die with some good old fashion brain trauma. The good thing is that the walkers are very dumb and very slow. They can hear, smell, walk and that is about it. Zombie Behavior - As is typical, the walkers are the undead that like to eat people. This means that you will turn into a walker even if you die by natural causes. The characters on the show refer to the zombies as 'Walkers.' In fact everyone on earth is infected. Bad News for Humans - In The Walking Dead a majority of the Human Race has been zombified.Nonetheless, Alexandria is arguably the best place the characters have lived. Even the characters in the show Michonne and Daryl seemed turned off by the Pleasantville feel of Alexandria. These cutesy little towns were popularized by our friend Andrés Duany and his team at DPZ.Īlexandria has a nice feel to it, but one of the main complaints about these new urbanist towns is that they feel and look too perfect.like Pleasantville. The neighborhoods are meant to be more walkable, compact and of higher architectural standards. For those not familiar with the term new urbanism, this is a form of design that involves new suburban communities that are designed to more urban standards. This little town has the feeling of a new urbanist community such as Seaside, Florida or the I'on neighborhood in Charleston, South Carolina. The reality is that the faux town of Alexandria is right around the block from the faux town of Woodbury in the real life town of Senoia, Georgia. The FarmĪlexandria is supposed to be located in the Alexandria, Virginia. Let's look at some of places we have been in The Walking Dead. Still don't believe that The Walking Dead is about architecture? The importance of architecture in The Walking Dead is highlighted by the fact that many of the seasons of the show are defined by the buildings and places that the characters inhabit. But I would argue that delight does play a role and I will get into that later in the post. In The Walking Dead, the best architecture is characterized by Firmness and Commodity with delight taking the back seat. I once introduced you all to a Roman architect named Vitruvius in a blog called What is Architecture? In that post I shared how Vitruvius defined architecture as Firmness, Commodity and Delight. During the apocalypse having adequate shelter is extremely important. (kinda is though) Fans of the show know that Architecture plays a huge role in The Walking Dead. This is not just my way of making this blog relevant. The Walking Dead is also about Architecture You see them stumbling around the sidewalk, mumbling, slobbering and if one of them bites you that is a very, very bad thing. Similar to drunk college kids in our neighborhood. The Walking Dead is a show about people and how they get along during a pretty awful time. The Walking Dead is not about the zombies. But The Walking Dead is much more than that. There is no doubt that the zombies are a big part of the show and some scenes get pretty gruesome.
